A Nova Scotia teenager killed herself after she was bullied when photos of her alleged rape were circulated online, her mother says.
Rehtaeh Parsons, 17, was taken off life support Sunday after hanging herself in the bathroom April 4.
Her mother, Leah, created a Facebook memorial page sharing her account of what happened to Rehtaeh.
In November 2011, Rehtaeh, then 15, was raped by four boys, Leah wrote. Photos were taken and spread around, and students at her Cole Harbour, N.S., school called her a slut, she said.
No charges were laid in the attack.
RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae said police investigated, but there wasn't enough evidence to convict, he told QMI Agency.
"Rehtaeh was suddenly shunned by almost everyone she knew, the harassment was so bad she had to move out of her own community to try to start anew in Halifax," Leah wrote.
She checked herself into hospital for psychiatric treatment and stayed for six weeks, Leah said, but the bullying continued.
Eventually, Rehtaeh moved back to Dartmouth, restarted school, made new friends and started getting her life together, Leah said.
Leah said she blames unchecked bullying and the justice system for her daughter's death.
"Rehtaeh is gone today because of the four boys that thought that raping a 15yr old girl was OK and to distribute a photo to ruin her spirit and reputation would be fun (sic)."
RCMP have launched a "sudden death involving a young person" investigation, McRae said.
