Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised the work of the United Nations saying it had put a lot of work into "solving the most complex international problems".
His comments came at the end of his meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon who is on a three day official visit to Russia. The UN chief has lent his support to a US-Russia proposal to convene talks in June between the Syrian government and the opposition.
Ban Ki-moon and Putin’s discussions also centred on the Middle East, Afghanistan, Iran, and the ongoing stand-off in the Korean Peninsula.
Putin said, "We’re really glad to see you as the secretary-general of the organisation that Russia founded along with its partners after the Second World War. Today, we as permanent members of the security council play a central role in the United Nations and other international organisations. There is no other such professional organisation in the world today as the United Nations. I believe we can move the most important topics for the world and the United Nations."
