The Russian Foreign Ministry has commented on Moscow’s position toward a draft statement of the UN Security Council chairman about the events in the Syrian city of Qusair, proposed by Britain. The ministry’s spokesman Aleksandr Lukashevich described the draft as untimely, adding that it would in fact demanded a one-sided ceasefire from the Syrian forces and giving passage to bandits surrounded in the city during a counterterrorist operation.
Russia disagreed with the draft, and it was not passed.
This approach to Britain’s document does not change Russia’s principal position, as Moscow is pushing for stopping of any violence in Syria and starting a political settlement not on a one-sided basis, but by all sides of the conflict, Lukashevich said.
